Windows 7 Requirements:

The minimum computer hardware requirements for running Windows 7 as recommended by Microsoft are:
  • 1GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1GB RAM (32-bit) / 2GB RAM (64-bit)
  • 16GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20GB (64-bit)
  • DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
A computer satisfying only minimum computer hardware requirements will not be able to run Aero effects such as display window transparencies and other animations. Microsoft has an Upgrade Advisor website where you can download a small tool to evaluate your computer for Windows 7 readiness.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Where Can I Purchase Windows 7?

Windows 7 will be available in retail stores sometime in November. The UCSD Bookstore will also carry Windows 7 at a discounted, educational price. Please visit their website for pricing.

What Version of Windows 7 Should I Purchase?

Complete details on the different versions offered by Microsoft can be found on their website.

Will Windows 7 run on my computer?

You may run Microsoft's Upgrade Advisor to analyze your hardware and get a definitive answer.

How much does Windows 7 cost?

Windows 7 Home Premium is about $119 for a full retail version, or $199 for an upgrade retail version. Other versions will be more expensive. However, for a limited time (until Jan. 2010), Microsoft is offering an upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium for $29.99. Please visit Microsoft's website for details.

I have Windows Vista/ XP Pro / Pro x64 / Media Center / Tablet PC / 2000 - will I be able to upgrade to Windows 7 without having to reformat my hard drive?

Windows 7 can be upgraded from Windows Vista, but will require a clean installation if it is upgraded from Windows XP or earlier. Please see this upgrade planning table to see if an upgrade is possible for your version of Windows.

Can I use Windows 7 on the ResNet network?

Yes, and ResNet provides customer support to computers running Windows 7. Keep in mind that ResNet's Acceptable Use Policy applies to all computers on ResNet, regardless of what operating system it is running.

Can I run Windows 7 Beta 1 / Beta 2 / RC1 / RC2 on my ResNet-connected computer?

ResNet strongly discourages students from continuing to run beta versions of operating systems when the final release is out. Microsoft is no longer providing support and updates for beta versions of the operating system, and these systems will become outdated quickly. Computers that are not running up-to-date operating systems violate the Acceptable Use Policy. ResNet does not provide support for beta and release candidate versions of Windows 7.

Should I get the 64-bit or 32-bit version of Windows 7?

All Windows 7 boxes come with a 64-bit and 32-bit disk, it is now down to choosing which one you will install. ResNet recommends the 64-bit version in order to take full advantage of your system's processing power and to increase RAM capacity, which is limited to 3.5 GB under the 32-bit operating system. Essentially, using the 64-bit OS will future-proof your computer. All your 32-bit applications will run fine under the 64-bit operating system. As a note, external devices over 3 years old may require 64-bit driver versions usually found on the manufacturer's website.

How do I upgrade from a 32-bit Operating System to the 64-bit version of Windows 7?

Please visit the Microsoft website for documentation.

How can I uninstall Windows 7?

There's a great instruction guide on Microsoft's support site.

Help! My beta/release candidate version of Windows 7 is shutting down every 2 hours!

Microsoft would like you to buy their product or downgrade. As a reminder, it is a violation of ResNet's Acceptable Use Policy to download a crack or patch.

How do I extend my Windows 7 trial period?

For those of you who would like more time than the 30 days before buying and activating Windows 7, click the Windows Orb, type "cmd" and type "[em]slmgr -rearm[/em]". You can do this up to 3 times for a total of 120 days, and it does not violate Microsoft's EULA.

My Windows 7 claims it's not genuine!

If you have the original serial (usually found either on the bottom of your laptop or on the installation disk case), reactivate Windows 7 by clicking "Windows Key + R" and type slui.exe 3 and reenter your serial.
